Damascus, Syria
Built between 705 and 715 AD by the Umayyad Caliph al-Walīd I, the Umayyad Mosque stands as one of the oldest stone mosques, and has been considered a sacred ground consistently for at least 3,000 years. Spanning 515 X 330 ft,the mosque creates a huge rectangle with a court yard in the middle.
The Umayyad Mosque is an extremely important architectural work in Islamic culture because it has stood the test of time and warfare time and time again. Although there is no way to completely restore any building to it's original wonder, the Great Mosque of Damascus is still an impressive monument. |
